Lighea 2022 Sicilian Doc White Wine Donnafugata from Zibibbo grapes (Moscato di Alessandria) in the island of Pantelleria.
A brilliant straw yellow color with greenish reflections. The nose offers a rich and fragrant bouquet with classic notes of orange blossom combined with citrusy scents (citron, bergamot) and nuances of Mediterranean scrub. The nose is perfectly reflected on the palate, enlivened by a fresh mineral vein.
PRODUCTION AREA: South-western Sicily, grapes produced on the island of Pantelleria; districts: Khamma, Mulini, Mueggen, Serraglia, Barone, Ghirlanda, Gibbiuna, Monastero.
DENOMINATION: Sicilia Doc Zibibbo.
GRAPES: Zibibbo (Moscato di Alessandria).
SOILS AND CLIMATE: altitude from 20 to 400 m s.l.m; Orography: complex, typically volcanic, with land cultivated mainly on terraces. Soils: sandy of lava origin with sub-acid or neutral reaction; deep and fertile, well endowed with minerals. The island is known for its sun and wind with mild winters with little rain, dry and windy summers.
VINEYARD: the vines are cultivated, inside hollows, with low pantesco sapling. The pantesco sapling vine has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a "creative and sustainable" practice. For the first time an agricultural practice is considered an intangible and cultural asset. Plant density from 2,500 to 3,600 plants per hectare with a yield of 50-60 quintals per hectare.
VINTAGE: on the island of Pantelleria that of 2021 was a less rainy year, recording 342 mm of rain compared to the average of 449 mm *. The conditions, free from adverse climatic events during the flowering and fruit set phases, created the conditions for a very good production. A hot August affected the amount of grapes produced which was below average. The quality of the grapes carefully selected and brought to the cellar is excellent. * We consider the rainfall recorded from 1 October to 30 September of the following year; the average is calculated starting from the 2013 harvest.
HARVEST: the harvest began on August 16th and ended on September 8th.
VINIFICATION: fermentation takes place in steel at a temperature of 14-16 ° C. Aging in tanks for two months and three months in the bottle before being marketed. ANALYTICAL DATA: alcohol 12.64% vol., Total acidity 5.6 g / l., PH 3.26.
TASTING NOTES (11/02/2022): Lighea 2021 has a bright straw yellow color with greenish reflections. The nose offers a rich and fragrant bouquet where the classic notes of orange blossom are combined with hints of citrus (cedar and bergamot) and exotic fruit (litchi). In the mouth the fruity and floral notes return accompanied by a marked freshness, with good persistence and a pleasant mineral finish.
LONGEVITY: to be enjoyed within 4-5 years.
FOOD & WINE: to try with raw fish, shellfish and tempura (based on fish or vegetables). We recommend it combined with all blue fish. Serve it in medium-sized glasses, it can be uncorked at the moment, excellent at 9-11°C.
COLLECTION Versatile and full of character: an intriguing selection, from aperitifs to desserts. When you want to share the pleasures of the table by combining a single wine with different dishes. Being together and intriguing all friends, from the curious to the passionate.
DIALOGUE WITH ART: "From the messy sun-colored hair the water of the sea dripped onto the very open green eyes" ... this is how Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa describes Lighea, the bewitching siren central character of one of his stories that gave rise to a wine complex and innovative and an equally original label. "It was not easy - says Gabriella, founder of Donnafugata together with her husband Giacomo - to print this label and keep the thousand shades of the colors of the island, portrayed in the original sketch".
FIRST VINTAGE: 1990.
