Family Selection Grande Cuvée Milazzo 2008

The summer of 2008 will be remembered as a scorching, dry one. The Selezione di Famiglia 2008 embodies—and its unique character—the story of the passion and hard work put into this challenging vintage to create a great wine.

To better manage the extreme nature of this harvest, it was decided to reduce the use of barriques: only 30% of the wine was aged in wood, starting with the must and fermenting in the same containers for just four months—a crucial decision to ensure greater elegance.

It is a Sicilian white wine, the Cru di Casa Milazzo, obtained from several clones of Chardonnay grown in land for years under certified organic farming, with only manual processing on the plant and manual harvesting in small crates; fermented and aged for about a year in oak barrels, it was bottled in 8088 750 ml bottles.

Its particularity and prestige are confirmed by the fact that for years it has continued to collect, with different vintages, awards at a national and international level in the most prestigious wine competitions.

COLLECTION METHOD: manual in 14 kg boxes

VINIFICATION: the grapes are delicately deseeded, followed by cold maceration for approximately 24 hours and soft pressing with closed lung pneumatic presses and subsequent fermentation at a controlled temperature partly in steel tanks and partly in oak barriques

MATURATION: 12 months in oak and steel barriques with continuous batônnage

ALCOHOL: 13.5% vol

PAIRING: shellfish, tuna and fassona tartare, confit cod, risotto with taleggio cream, truffle, long-matured raw ham. It also pairs perfectly with light meats and vegetable-based dishes

Selezione di Famiglia is the wine of great challenges. Competing with the great producers in the use of Chardonnay and creating what we like to call the Milazzo Chardonnay.

CLONAL SELECTION

To give life to our family Cru, particular Chardonnay clones were selected over time with very small bunches and a very low yield per plant, less than 1kg per plant obtained thanks also to manual thinning, and a very strong aromatic profile with almost muscat notes.

WORK IN THE CELLAR

Strictly manual harvesting. The free-run must begins fermentation in steel, halfway through fermentation it is placed in new and second passage barriques where it will complete fermentation and where it will remain for a year, this will help to enhance and enhance the aromatic precursors of the grape. During refinement the wine remains on its lees and is subjected to periodic batônnage.

SENSORY NOTES

Pale yellow color with green reflections. Mineral on the nose with references to flint, notes of tropical fruit, fig pulp and candied citrus. The vanilla and thiol notes are light and intriguing. On the palate it is very elegant, full and persistent. A marked balance and freshness make it a wine with great aging potential.
