THE SYMBOL OF TRINACRIA

The three legs represent the three vertices of the island:

- Capo Boeo, northwest, near Trapani

- Capo Peloro, north-east, near Messina

- Capo Passero, south, near Syracuse

in fact, according to some studies, the trinacria means "three promontories" from the Greek treis (three) and akra (promontory).

It is made up of 4 basic elements:

- The head: the central part of the trinacria is the head of the Gorgon or Medusa, which according to mythology petrified anyone who looked at it. Precisely for this reason, Medusa's head symbolizes the removal of evil through its "petrification".

- The legs: the three bent legs protruding from the head which have two different explanations: both the changes of life and the seasons, therefore the victory of good over evil like that of the summer sun over winter darkness, and both the wheel of life, then the past, the present and the future.

- Snakes: on the trinacria the woman's hair is snakes, which by changing skin represent renewal and rebirth.

- Wheat: in some versions of the trinacria instead of snakes there are ears of wheat, which symbolize wealth and fertility.
