Guide to Sicilian wines: how to choose the right bottle

Sicilian wine is not one style. Etna, Marsala, Pantelleria, Vittoria, Menfi and the smaller islands produce different grapes, altitudes and traditions. That is why choosing by colour alone is not enough: choose by food pairing, occasion and personal taste.

Which Sicilian wine should I choose if I do not know the grapes?

If you want a soft and recognisable red, start with Nero d’Avola. If you want elegance, minerality and a lighter structure, look at Etna reds made from Nerello Mascalese. For a fresh and versatile white choose Grillo, Catarratto or Inzolia; for a more vertical, mineral white, Carricante from Etna is often the most interesting option.

What is the difference between Etna wine and Nero d’Avola?

Nero d’Avola usually gives warmer, fruitier wines with cherry, spice and Mediterranean body. Etna Rosso is grown on volcanic soils, often at higher altitude, and tends to be more elegant, mineral and fine-grained. Nero d’Avola is excellent with meat sauces, grilled meats and aged cheeses; Etna Rosso works well with tuna, mushrooms, white meats and more refined dishes.

Which Sicilian wine goes with fish?

For grilled fish, seafood and antipasti, Sicilian white wines are the natural choice: Grillo, Catarratto, Inzolia and Carricante. With salty dishes such as pasta with bottarga, anchovies or sardines, choose a white with acidity and personality. With tuna or swordfish, a rosé or a light Etna red served slightly cool can also work.

Are Marsala and Passito di Pantelleria only dessert wines?

Not only. Sicilian sweet and fortified wines are wonderful with almond sweets, chocolate and dry pastries, but they can also match aged cheeses and savoury dishes. Passito di Pantelleria is aromatic, rich and honeyed; Marsala can be dry, semi-dry or sweet and, in more complex versions, is a meditation wine.

What makes Sicilian craft beers different?

Many Sicilian craft beers play with island ingredients or Mediterranean aromas: citrus peel, honey, carob, ancient grains or spices. They pair well with street food, fried dishes, salumi, cheeses and spicy food. A fresh pale beer is the easiest choice; amber or red beers are better with stronger cheeses and meats.
